Grade Preps First Excursion

On the 22nd of June EMP Foundation students went on their first excursion for a community walk and to see a movie. Everyone was very excited about the excursion they were on with their friends. We were very lucky to have the whole cinema to ourselves, we ate popcorn and had a drink to go with it. When the movie finished we walked to the library and had story time. After that, we walked to see the police station and as everyone was getting tired we waited for the buses to take us home.

Toys Incursion

This term for History, Grade 1 students have been learning about ‘The Past and The Present’. As part of our Unit we had a Toys incursion. Students learned how toys have evolved over time, how they work and the materials they are made from, through constant play. They focused on construction, imagination, skill and active toys and games. Students were able to experience toys from as early as BC such as spinning tops and yo-yo's, to the 1500's with hula hoops and skipping ropes, to the late 1900's and modern day with miniature bricks and some remote control vehicles. What a great experience it was!

Poetry in Grade 6

Students have been studying various forms of poetry. Here are two examples by Isra Hassan and Eesa Hussein.

THE OTHER SIDE

I ran after it,
Ran the fastest I ever could,
But I couldn’t outrun it,
So I walked back to the wood,
Anger rose inside me,
As I slapped my sweaty palms against the trees,
Panting for some fresh air,
As I looked down at my grazed knees,
Oh, how I had fallen,
Losing sight of the malicious creature,
Wanting to punch it,
Giving it a seizure,
I looked at the blood,
That suddenly trickled down my knee,
looking for something to cover it,
And that is when I see….
A shadow creeping from behind the tree,
A shadow that belonged to someone who was spying on me!
The creature poked his head,
Out of the birch wood tree,
And so I started running,
Running towards the place where I hid the key,
The key to what? You ask,
Not the key to heaven,
Not the key to hell,
But the key to my house,
I ran inside,
Sweating and breathing heavily,
I closed the stood behind me,
And then I turned around and saw,
All my clothes scattered across the floor,
All the light bulbs broken,
The furniture all out of place,
And all the drawers open,
A gasp escaped up my throat,
As I realized I have been robbed,
My sturdy items have been broken,
And then I sobbed, and sobbed,
I ran to my room and stopped at the door,
to see written in bold red writing, “THE OTHER SIDE”,
I opened the door but all I saw was darkness, then I stepped inside.
I saw bright stars racing around me,
But I had the courage to stand up,
and so I did,
But all I saw was darkness,
And then out of nowhere, I heard a loud, booming voice,
A voice full of anger and wickedness,
a voice you would never want to hear,
And it said:

“HOW DARE YOU ENTER MY HOME!”
“JUST WAIT TILL WE MEET… ON THE OTHER SIDE”

A NASTY FLOOD

One day I was at home on my play station,
when a flood almost hit the nation,
For weeks and weeks there was nothing but rain,
where I was at home and could not restrain,

My friend told me the water had risen 2 metres high,
Which I thought was a big lie,
With a quick flash of lightning and devastation,
The devastating flood hit the entire nation,

In a place where the chance of getting a flood was low,
The flood had spread over there and was beginning to flow,
The news had said it’s going to be a bad week,
Just as calculations were beginning to go sleek,

Around the globe the flood began to rise,
When a demon near the Bermuda triangle glared into my eyes,
just when the water started to appear,
It became clear the end of the world was near…

Language Week at Sirius College

This year at Sirius College, we celebrated language week with different activities. We held a small concert with the grade one students. Students and their families were also allowed to attend this event. After the concert, everyone was treated to Turkish, Arabic and French food with afternoon tea. A storytelling program was organised in Turkish and English for our grade two students followed by a role play. Our grade three students developed their listening abilities by watching children's movies in Turkish. We organized outdoor games and competitions with grade four and five students. We also decorated the school class cabinets with traditional clothes, books and objects to represent Turkish, Arabic and French culture and traditions.
